MegaLaunch vs Product Hunt: which one fits your launch?

Choose Product Hunt if you can bring people on one day you pick, and you want to pay nothing and add no link to your site. Choose MegaLaunch if you want a known go-live time, a followed link from the Free listing and daily, weekly and monthly leaderboards, or a Premium launch at $4.99 one-time (excl. VAT).

MegaLaunch publishes this page and sells Premium launches. Facts checked between 24 Oct 2026 and 25 Oct 2026, sources below. How this page was checked

MegaLaunch vs Product Hunt at a glance

Each Product Hunt cell quotes its own pages, and its link type was read on live product pages. The MegaLaunch column is generated from its code, so it always matches its pricing page. Read the conditions before planning a date: a free option on either side still comes with rules.

Format: one launch day or a listing that keeps counting

Product Hunt is built around the day. Its launch guide describes daily launches that compete on a homepage leaderboard, with Product of the Day at the top2. You choose that day yourself, and the guide suggests going live at 12:01 am Pacific Time if you plan ahead2. Everything you prepare, from the gallery to the first comment, is aimed at those 24 hours.

MegaLaunch works the other way round: each product gets a permanent listing, ranked on a daily, a weekly and a monthly leaderboard1. A product keeps its page after launch day, and its votes keep counting on the weekly and monthly boards, so a slow first morning does not end the launch. The trade-off is that there is no single moment that everyone watches together.

Neither format suits every maker. A founder with a mailing list, a co-founder in another time zone and a free day is set up for a concentrated launch. A solo developer shipping between client work may prefer a listing that does not punish a missed afternoon. Decide which of the two you are before you compare anything else.

Pricing

Product Hunt charges nothing to launch: its launch guide says the platform is free to use2, and it describes no paid launch tier2. It links an Advertise page, which is a separate product this page does not compare, because the guide gives no price for it.

MegaLaunch has two launch plans. The Free listing goes live 48 hours after submission, with a link back to MegaLaunch1. Premium costs $4.99 one-time (excl. VAT) and goes live once payment is confirmed1. It also removes the link back and adds a highlighted card in Premium launches today on your launch day, a feature in The weekly shortlist (MegaLaunch’s newsletter) and a post on its X account during your launch week. The pricing page lists every detail.

So the money question is narrow. If you are happy to add a link back to MegaLaunch, both launches can cost nothing. If you would rather not place any link on your site, Product Hunt asks for none2, and MegaLaunch asks for $4.99 excl. VAT, once.

Process and turnaround

On Product Hunt the calendar is yours, with one constraint on new members: a newly created account waits one week before it can post a product8. The same page recommends joining well ahead, three months or more, so a week is only the minimum. If you have never used your account, start now and spend the waiting time commenting on other launches, so your profile is not empty on the day.

On MegaLaunch the clock starts when you submit. A Free listing goes live automatically 48 hours later, once the link back has been checked1. Premium goes live as soon as payment is confirmed, which helps when a launch is tied to a release or a post you already scheduled.

Either way, plan the day before you pick the platform. The free launch time planner shows what a start time means in your audience’s time zones, and the product launch checklist puts the preparation in order, from the listing copy to the follow-up message.

What you receive

A Product Hunt launch gives you a product page and a place on that day’s leaderboard, with the chance to finish as Product of the Day. What happens next depends on the people you bring and on how you answer comments during the day. Nothing in its launch guide promises a number of visits, and this page does not either.

A MegaLaunch listing gives you a permanent product page with images and a launch video, a followed link to your site, votes and comments, and a Featured on MegaLaunch badge you can add to your site. Premium adds the presentation described above. None of these is a traffic promise: they are formats, and what they bring depends on your product and your preparation.

Links and Domain Rating

The link from a launch page matters if you count on it for search. On the Product Hunt product pages read for this comparison, the Visit website link carried rel="noreferrer noopener ugc"3. The ugc value tells search engines that a link sits in user-generated content, and Google treats it as a hint, like nofollow.

On MegaLaunch, the Free listing links to your site without a nofollow or sponsored attribute1. A live MegaLaunch product page read the same day showed rel="noopener" only on the link to the maker’s site, and Premium listings, which skip the link back, keep that followed link.

This page shows no Domain Rating for either site. Ahrefs could not be read for both on the same day, and a figure measured for one side only would not be a fair comparison. If links are your main goal, read whether directory submissions help SEO before you pay for anything.

Votes and ranking rules

Product Hunt keeps its rules short. Its launch guide calls one rule the only real one: you cannot ask people directly to upvote your product2. Asking them to visit and comment is fine, so a launch message should invite feedback rather than votes. Its help center adds a rule about money: ads may not run on your launch day, so that they cannot influence the leaderboard or Product of the Day5. Ads can run in the days after, and keep a product visible there.

MegaLaunch publishes its rule on the moderation page: one vote per person, and paid options never change votes or rankings4. Premium, sponsored placements and every other paid option change how a product is presented, never its votes or its position on the leaderboard4. Premium does buy a highlighted card in a separate rail on launch day, which is visibility, not rank.

In practice, both platforms keep money away from the vote, Product Hunt by keeping ads off launch day and MegaLaunch by a rule on every paid option, and both reward the same work. The people who already know your product matter most. On MegaLaunch they have a week and a month to find your listing; on Product Hunt they need to show up on the day you picked.

API and AI agents

Product Hunt documents a GraphQL API that needs an access token and, by default, may not be used for commercial purposes7. That suits a script or a dashboard that reads launch data, within its terms.

MegaLaunch offers a public REST API, an MCP server and an llms.txt file6. The API documentation and the MCP page explain how assistants such as Claude or Cursor can search published products, recent launches and the leaderboard, so a listed product can come up in those answers.

Refunds

There is nothing to refund on a free Product Hunt launch. On MegaLaunch, the Free listing costs nothing either, and the terms for a Premium payment are on the refund policy page. Read them before paying, as you would for any launch service.

Doing both, in a sensible order

You do not have to choose once and for all. One workable order: list on MegaLaunch first, watch which part of your page people react to, fix the copy and the first-run experience, then pick a Product Hunt day a few weeks later when you can be online for all of it. The reverse also works when a release fixes the Product Hunt date.

Whatever the order, tag each link so you can tell the visits apart. The free UTM builder makes one link per platform, and measuring referral traffic explains what to record so a launch is judged on sign-ups or first actions, not on a vote count. For the message itself, see how to write a launch announcement.

What Product Hunt does better

  • Launching costs nothing and asks for no link or badge on your site: its launch guide calls it free to use2 and states no badge requirement2.
  • You choose the exact day, and even the minute, so a team, a mailing list and social posts can all line up behind one date2.
  • Every launch of the day competes on one homepage leaderboard for Product of the Day2, which rewards a maker who can bring people on that day.

What MegaLaunch does better

  • The Free listing links to your site without nofollow or sponsored attributes1, while the Product Hunt link read on live pages is marked ugc3.
  • A launch keeps competing on weekly and monthly leaderboards after its first day1, so missing a few hours online does not end it.
  • The go-live time is known in advance: 48 hours after a Free submission, or as soon as a Premium payment is confirmed1.

Who should pick which

Choose MegaLaunch if

  • You can add a link back to MegaLaunch, or pay $4.99 one-time (excl. VAT) to skip it, and you want a followed link to your site.
  • You cannot be online for a full launch day and prefer a launch that also counts over a week and a month.
  • You want a known go-live time: 48 hours after a Free submission, or right after payment for Premium.

Choose Product Hunt if

  • You have people ready to visit and comment on a day you choose.
  • You want to pay nothing and place no link or badge on your site.
  • Your account is more than a week old, or you can open one well ahead of the launch.

Alternatives to both

Frequently asked questions

Is Product Hunt free?

Yes. Its launch guide says launching is free to use, and it describes no paid launch2. The guide links an Advertise page, which is a separate product. The real costs are preparation time and a day spent answering comments.

Is Product Hunt still worth it in 2026?

It is worth it when you can bring people on the day, because each day’s launches compete on one homepage leaderboard. It fits less well when you have no audience yet, cannot be online all day, or mainly want a followed link, since the link on its product pages is marked ugc. This page measures no traffic, so judge it with your own analytics.

Does Product Hunt give a dofollow backlink?

On the product pages read for this comparison, the Visit website link carried rel="noreferrer noopener ugc"3. Google treats ugc as a hint, like nofollow. Treat a Product Hunt launch as attention and feedback rather than link building.

What is the difference between MegaLaunch and Product Hunt?

Product Hunt concentrates a launch on one day you pick, for free, with no link required. MegaLaunch keeps a permanent listing on daily, weekly and monthly leaderboards; its Free listing goes live 48 hours after submission with a link back, and Premium costs $4.99 one-time (excl. VAT).

Can I launch on MegaLaunch and Product Hunt?

Yes, nothing stops you from doing both. One workable order is to list on MegaLaunch first, use the feedback to fix your page, then pick a Product Hunt day a few weeks later when you can be online. MegaLaunch’s Free listing needs a link back; Premium does not.

Methodology and sources

Product Hunt’s facts were read on its own pages on 24 October 2026: its launch guide, its guide on preparing before a launch and its API documentation; its help center article on ad campaigns was read on 25 October 2026. Its link type was read in the rendered HTML of public product pages, where the Visit website link carried rel="noreferrer noopener ugc". MegaLaunch’s facts are generated from its code, and a live MegaLaunch listing read the same day showed rel="noopener" only on the link to the maker’s site.

Left out: traffic, audience size and Domain Rating, because no source measured both sides on the same basis on the same day. Product Hunt’s Advertise offer is mentioned but not compared, because its launch guide gives no price. Matt builds MegaLaunch and wrote this page; the order of the sections follows the questions a maker asks, not a ranking.

MegaLaunch’s prices are shown excl. VAT, as everywhere on its site: tax is added at checkout based on the buyer’s country. Other platforms’ prices are quoted as displayed on their own sites, which do not always say whether tax is included, so a MegaLaunch price and another price on this page may not be on the same tax basis. Compare the totals each checkout shows before you pay.
