How to tag your directory listings
When you list a product on several directories in the same week, the visits arrive at the same time and blur together in your analytics. A UTM link fixes that: each listing points to your site with its own label, and your reports show which directory sent visitors, how many signed up and which ones were worth the effort.
1. Pick a naming convention before the first link
The builder lowercases values and turns spaces into hyphens by default. Keep it that way unless your team already has a convention. Decide once what each parameter means:
- Source is who sent the visit: the directory or site name, for example
megalaunch. - Medium is the kind of channel:
directory, launch, email, social. - Campaign groups the whole push, for example
launchorv2-launch. - Content is optional and tells two links on the same page apart, such as a logo link and a text link.
2. Use bulk mode for a directory push
Switch to One per directory, paste the directory names one per line and keep the same medium and campaign. Each line becomes its own utm_source, and you can copy the list or a CSV to keep in your launch spreadsheet. Duplicate names are skipped, so pasting a messy list is fine.
3. Check the live listing
Some directories keep your full URL with its parameters, others keep only the domain or rewrite the link. Once a listing is published, click it yourself and check the address bar. If the parameters are gone, that directory will show up as a plain referral instead, which is still useful.
4. Keep the destination honest
Point each link to the page that matches the listing: your homepage for a general directory, a pricing or feature page when the listing is about that. Use https, keep the same domain everywhere, and avoid redirect chains, which can drop the parameters.
Good practices
- Never tag internal links on your own site, only links that others publish.
- Write your values down in one place so the whole team reuses them.
- Keep campaigns short and readable. You will type them in filters later.
- Prepare the rest of your launch with the launch checklist, and write the listing itself with the listing copy checker.
