How to launch on Product Hunt: a practical guide for indie makers
A step-by-step Product Hunt launch guide for solo makers: account timing, listing assets, the first comment, launch-day rules and the two weeks after.

In short: Join early, hunt your own product, prepare the listing and first comment in advance, and spend launch day answering people instead of chasing upvotes.
Launching on Product Hunt takes about a month of quiet preparation and one busy day. The short version: create your personal account early, hunt the product yourself, prepare every listing field and your first comment in advance, schedule the launch for 12:01 am Pacific Time, and spend the day answering people. Votes follow conversation, not the other way around.
This guide follows Product Hunt's own launch documentation, which I checked on October 21, 2026. Where something is my recommendation rather than a platform rule, I say so.
What a Product Hunt launch can and cannot do
A Product Hunt launch puts your product in front of early adopters for one day and leaves you with a permanent product page. It is good at three things: first feedback from people who like trying new tools, a visible milestone you can point to, and a burst of visits. It will not fix a product that people do not understand, and a high rank does not guarantee customers.
Before you start, write one measurable goal. Product Hunt's before launch guide lists many valid ones, from feedback and sign-ups to followers and press, and stresses that plenty of products that never reach Product of the Day still meet their goals. "Twenty people complete onboarding and tell me where they got stuck" is a better goal than "top 5".
Before launch: account, hunter and audience
Three rules shape your calendar:
- New accounts must wait one week before posting. Product Hunt recommends joining months earlier and taking part in the community.
- You do not need a hunter. According to the same guide, 79% of featured posts were self-hunted, and paying anyone to hunt or push traffic breaks the guidelines.
- Company accounts cannot post or comment. The how Product Hunt works page explains that the community wants to hear from people, not logos. Use your personal profile and complete it.
The same page lists what gets a product featured: something new or substantially updated, usable now (closed betas are usually not a good fit), and a clear website. If someone must join a waitlist to try your product, wait.
Use the weeks before launch to tell your existing audience the date: newsletter subscribers, beta users, people you talk to on X or in communities where you are already active.
Prepare the listing before you schedule it
The submission form auto-saves drafts, so prepare each field calmly. These limits come from Product Hunt's preparing for launch guide:
| Field | Rule or limit | My advice |
|---|---|---|
| URL | Your product page; shortened and UTM links are refused | Link a page with one clear action |
| Tagline | 60 characters | Say what it does, for whom |
| Description | 500 characters | Problem, solution, main features |
| Launch tags | Up to 3 | Pick the ones buyers browse |
| Thumbnail | Square, 240x240 recommended, under 3 MB | GIFs animate only on hover |
| Gallery | At least 2 images, 1270x760 recommended | Show real screens, not slogans |
| Video | Optional, YouTube links only | 53% of Product of the Day winners since 2021 had one |
You can schedule the launch up to one month ahead, which gives you a link to share before the day. If you need help writing the tagline and description, the structure in how to write a product launch announcement works here too.
Write the first comment
The first comment sits right under your gallery. Product Hunt reports that 70% of products that reached Product of the Day, Week or Month had a first comment from the maker. Write it before launch day. A structure that works:
- Who you are and why you built it, in two sentences.
- Who it is for and the main use case.
- Three key features, in plain language.
- Pricing, and any offer for the community.
- One specific question, such as "Which step of the setup was confusing?"
Avoid marketing speak and never ask for upvotes. Ask for feedback.
Pick the day and time
The homepage runs on a 24-hour cycle based on Pacific Time, so 12:01 am PT gives your launch the full day. Product Hunt also notes that weekend launches get 15% more "Visit" clicks than weekday launches, because big companies tend to launch on weekdays. For a solo maker in Europe, 12:01 am PT is 9:01 am in Paris, which makes a comfortable working day. The best day remains the one when you can be online and responsive.
Launch day: be present, follow the rules
Your two jobs on launch day are spreading the word and answering comments quickly. Product Hunt's sharing your launch page is clear about the rules:
- Share your link anywhere, but ask people to visit and comment, not to upvote.
- No giveaways or contests that reward upvotes.
- No mass messages or scraped email lists.
- Only post in communities where you were already active.
Email is your strongest channel on the day. Send a short note to your list with the link and the question you want answered.
The two weeks after launch
The launch page fades after a day, but the product page stays. Claim it, ask happy users for reviews, and add the badge to your site. Product Hunt's two weeks post launch guide also explains relaunching: if you submit again within six months, you will be asked whether it is a major update.
Then do the slow part. Paul Graham's essay Do Things that Don't Scale argues that early startups grow because founders recruit users by hand. Reply personally to every person who signed up, ask what they expected, and fix what blocked them.
Product Hunt is one stop, not the whole route. You can keep a permanent listing on MegaLaunch, compare other Product Hunt alternatives, and run through the launch checklist before your date. If you also want a dated homepage placement on MegaLaunch, the one-time Premium launch is explained on the pricing page.
