Best AI tool directories: how to choose where to submit

Compare the best AI tool directories by what they give back: free or paid queue, review delay, link attribute and the tracking tags they add to your URL.

What AI tool directories are, and why AI makers have their own

An AI tool directory is a catalog of AI products sorted by task: write, transcribe, generate images, review code. Its readers arrive with a job to do and leave through the link to the tool that seems to do it, unlike a launch platform, where people browse what is new.

AI makers have their own directory ecosystem. Of the 100 directories MegaLaunch studied on 21 Oct 2026, 24 are AI directories. Most are small sites by link metrics: only five of the 23 with a Domain Rating of their own reach DR 50. Several of the best known ones charge for a reviewed listing, on terms that differ more than their homepages suggest.

Lists of a hundred AI directories tell you where you could submit, not which ones are worth the fee, the wait or the link back they ask for. That depends on five things each directory decides for itself, all checkable before you submit: the free route, the price, the delay, the link to your site and the tracking tags added to it.

Best AI tool directories compared by what they give back

The table compares six AI directories, all covered by MegaLaunch’s comparison pages, on those five points. Each fact was read on the directory’s own pages on 31 Oct 2026, the link columns in the HTML of live listings. The order is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Read on 31 Oct 2026 on each directory’s submit, pricing, FAQ, terms and robots.txt pages, and in the HTML of one or two public listings per directory (sources at the end). Prices are quoted as each site displays them. A link attribute is what the sampled listings carried that day, not a promise for yours.

Submit an AI tool for free: the routes that exist

Free routes exist, but each one charges something other than money. There’s An AI For That runs a thread on X once a month and lists one tool from it for free. Future Tools takes free submissions through a form a person reviews, and its FAQ is frank about the odds: more than 75% of submitted tools are not approved, and you will likely not hear back either way. AI Directories lists a tool for free when the site is above DR 10 and links back from its homepage or footer, and the free listing stays only while that link does.

Futurepedia is the opposite case. Its former submission page answered 404 on 31 Oct 2026, and its only public form updates a tool that is already listed. Its terms describe listings sold for a one-time fee, with a refund if a tool does not meet its editorial policy, but no price is published. If your tool is not there yet, plan your launch without it and check again later.

So count the real price of a free route: hours spent on a long shot, a link on your homepage you must keep in place, or a slot you may not win. A link back is a fair trade when the directory’s readers fit your product, and a poor one when you would remove it next month. Note each condition in your tracking sheet.

What a paid AI directory listing buys, and what it does not

The paid listings of the large AI directories buy two things: a guaranteed review on a short clock and a permanent page. There’s An AI For That states an average of 1 to 2 days, Toolify a listing within 48 hours with no queue, and TopAI.tools says Fast Track listings go live within 24 to 48 hours. All three promise an automatic refund if your tool is not accepted, and Toolify and TopAI.tools both describe the listing as permanent.

An audience result is where the sales pages disagree. Toolify’s own FAQ says it cannot guarantee sales or traffic. There’s An AI For That’s launch page advertised 700 to 10,000+ targeted visitors “guaranteed” within the first week on 31 Oct 2026, while the card of its $437 plan described the same range as estimated clicks. Audience figures on a sales page are the directory’s own claims, and they move: the same launch page showed 5M+ monthly visitors when MegaLaunch first read it for its comparison with There’s An AI For That on 24 Oct 2026, and 3.5M+ on 31 Oct 2026. Treat every such number as the seller’s claim, not as a forecast of your clicks.

The upsells answer a different question. There’s An AI For That’s $437 plan adds a guaranteed newsletter spot and priority review, TopAI.tools sells seven days of featured placement for $229, AI Directories sells a Featured plan on top of Pro or Monthly, and Future Tools caps its featured slots at two a week. Buy the basic listing first and measure what it sends: a featured week bought before you know that baseline leaves you nothing to compare it with.

Are AI directory links dofollow? Read the live listing

Sales pages and live listings do not always say the same thing. Toolify states that your site gets at least six dofollow links. On the listing we read, its two buttons to the tool carried rel="dofollow", which is not one of the values Google documents (sponsored, ugc and nofollow), so they read as plain followed links, while the links inside the description carried nofollow. TopAI.tools states no link attribute at all: the main button was followed on one listing we sampled and nofollow on another built from the same template.

Future Tools is different again. Its Visit button points to futuretools.io/go/, a path its robots.txt asks crawlers to stay out of, which then redirects to the tool. That works for visitors, but it is not a link a crawler is invited to follow. There’s An AI For That, AI Directories and Futurepedia linked straight to the tool, with no nofollow, on the listings we read.

So never pay for the attribute: it is the directory’s decision, it can differ from one listing to the next and it can change. Google asks for advertisements and paid placements to be marked rel="sponsored" (qualify outbound links, checked on 31 Oct 2026), so a followed link on a paid listing is a choice the directory makes, not something your fee entitles you to. And check a recent listing in your own category with the free dofollow checker before you submit, then your own once it is live. Do directory submissions help SEO? explains why the link is only part of a listing’s value.

Their tracking tags, your analytics

The last column of the table matters more than it looks. Most AI directories rewrite the link to your site with tags of their own, so your analytics names those visits the way each directory chose: referral, marketplace or no medium at all for the same kind of visit. TopAI.tools adds a via parameter, which is not a standard UTM tag.

Plan for it before you submit. Write down, for each directory, the source name its link will carry, so one filter on that name finds every visit it sends. If you would rather keep one naming scheme, build a tagged URL per directory with the free UTM builder, submit that instead of your bare homepage, then open the live listing and see whether the directory kept your tags or replaced them.

Whichever tags arrive, judge each listing on what visitors do after they land, not on clicks: the guide to measuring traffic from directory listings has a worksheet for that.

How to choose an AI tool directory, in order

Run the same five checks on every candidate, in this order, and drop it at the first one that fails. The cheapest checks come first.

  • Eligibility. Toolify names a tool that does not use AI as a common reason for refusal, Futurepedia rejects AI newsletters and other directories, Future Tools does not accept custom GPTs or waitlist-only products, and TopAI.tools wants clear AI features in a tool that is fully functional and accessible.
  • The real price. A fee, a link back kept on your homepage, or a long shot with no reply. Write it down for each directory.
  • The clock. A stated 48 hours or 1 to 2 days lets you plan a launch week. No stated delay means you schedule nothing around it.
  • The link. Read it on a recent live listing in your category with the dofollow checker, not on the sales page.
  • The tags. Note the source name the directory adds, or the tagged URL you will submit, before the listing goes live.

Order your submissions and write for a task catalog

Order also matters across directories. There’s An AI For That offers a PPC bonus, in ad credit, to tools that launch there before any other platform: $100 with the $49 plan and up to $300 with the $437 one. If that credit matters to you, submit there first and start the rest afterwards. If it does not, ignore it and start where your buyers already look.

Then write the listing for the reader of a task catalog. Lead with the job the tool does and its result, then the input it needs and the price. See how comparable products phrase the same task in MegaLaunch’s AI collection, and run your tagline through the free headline and tagline analyzer to catch vague words and lengths over each form’s limit. The same brief then serves the software directories in the SaaS directory guide.

What the 24 AI directories we studied showed

Submitting MegaLaunch itself to the 24 AI directories we studied, on 21 Oct 2026, showed obstacles that lists of AI directories rarely mention. Four blocked our submission, for reasons such as a missing submission form, a sign-in limited to Google or a magic link, or a topic narrower than the name suggested. One failed inside the form. The other 19 took the submission and went into each directory’s own review.

The link data is a reminder to check for yourself. For six of the 24, we read the followed link on the directory’s own page that day; for the other 18, the dofollow status comes from a third-party report. Their Domain Rating, recorded from Ahrefs and the same report, runs from DR 12 to DR 79, with a median of DR 37, leaving out one hosted on a platform whose DR is not its own.

Our research list is not public, so these figures name no directory. The pattern is what matters: a directory’s size says little about whether you can submit to it or what it puts on your link.

Where MegaLaunch fits for an AI product

MegaLaunch is a launch platform for independent products, not an AI directory: it puts a new tool in front of makers and early adopters on its launch day, while AI directories reach people searching a catalog by task. AI products on MegaLaunch are grouped in its AI collection.

On MegaLaunch, a Free listing goes live 48 hours after submission, once we have checked your link back to MegaLaunch, and links to your site without nofollow or sponsored attributes.

Premium costs $4.99 one-time: it goes live as soon as payment is confirmed and needs no link back. Neither option buys votes or a ranking: a launch is one more route to measure beside the AI directories, not a replacement for them.

If the form work is what holds you back, our directory submission service submits a product by hand to the directories on our list, AI directories included, in three one-time plans: Starter $99, Growth $149 and Mega $199. Directories that take AI tools only are skipped for a product that is not an AI tool, and the report says so. Directories decide whether and when they publish and which attributes their links carry, and we do not promise rankings, traffic or Domain Rating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI tool directory?

There is no single best one. For a reviewed listing within about two days, There’s An AI For That ($49), TopAI.tools ($47) and Toolify ($99) had the clearest offers on 31 Oct 2026; Future Tools and AI Directories had free routes with conditions. Choose by eligibility, real price, delay, link and tracking tags, in that order.

Can I submit an AI tool for free?

Yes, with conditions. There’s An AI For That lists one tool per monthly thread on X for free. Future Tools reviews free submissions, but its FAQ says more than 75% are not approved. AI Directories lists sites above DR 10 for free in exchange for a backlink from your homepage or footer, kept while you are listed.

How long does an AI directory take to list a tool?

It depends on the directory and the plan. On 31 Oct 2026, There’s An AI For That stated an average of 1 to 2 days, Toolify 48 hours, TopAI.tools 24 to 48 hours for Fast Track, and AI Directories 72 hours for a free listing, instantly for a paid one. Future Tools gives no delay.

Are AI directory backlinks dofollow?

Often, but not always, and not because you paid. On the listings read on 31 Oct 2026, There’s An AI For That, Toolify, AI Directories and Futurepedia linked to the tool without nofollow, TopAI.tools varied from one listing to the next, and Future Tools sent the click through a redirect path its robots.txt disallows. Check a live listing with the dofollow checker.

Can I list a product that is not an AI tool in AI directories?

Usually not in the large ones. Toolify names a tool that does not use AI as a common reason for refusal, Futurepedia accepts AI tools only and TopAI.tools asks for clear AI-powered features. A product with one AI feature should say exactly what that feature does, or go to general software directories, which the SaaS directory guide covers.
